It was merry on December 21st. Songs were sung, tunes played and prizes won. Rein Rutnik and Keenan Reimer-Watts are folk musicians hailing from Kitchener/ Waterloo. The music they play is a mix of Blues, Swing and Fiddle Tunes. They will be the feature act at our next Acoustic Open Stage Night which will be January 18th.

Thanks to the Pluckin’ Cutlers for their great feature performance on Friday, Nov. 16. It was fun to laugh and sing along with Bob and Sue who were accompanied by John on bass. The size of the group more than doubled with the addition of singers and flute as shown in the pictures on the Performers Pictures page, taken by Gord Castle and I. Next month, Dec. 21st, there will be no feature act.

The Pluckin’ Cutlers will be the featured performers to start off the evening with a 30 minute set of their light hearted ukulele accompanied songs, On Friday November 16th, 2018 at 8pm when we return to the Mill Courtland Community Centre for our monthly Open Stage.
Bring your guitars, accordions, voices, acoustic instruments of all sorts or just your eyes and ears and make yourself feel at home. Do not feel shy because you have not played for us before. The doors will open and sign-up for the open stage will start at 7:30 pm. Remember when you sign up you get to play/sing two songs in a set of 10 minutes or less and you need to be ready to start playing when your turn starts so you won’t lose any of your 10 minutes.

Here is a brief Bio for the Pluckin’ Cutlers:
After a friendship spanning 25+ years The Pluckin’ Cutlers (Bob & Sue) became more than friends and found they had an interest in playing music together – Bob on banjo, mandolin, guitar and ukulele, and Sue on guitar and ukulele. Then one day around 10 years ago Toronto’s Corktown Ukulele Jam, where they performed regularly, entered their lives and all other instruments moved to the back burner. They have performed at many different venues including featuring at the Lazy Cat Café in Toronto and regular monthly performances at WUPS (the Waterloo (Region) Ukulele Performance Stage) that they founded a year ago. Bob enjoys the ballads and Sue likes the silly stuff – but they both love to play the fun music. The family that plays together stays together! Contact: WUPS.info@gmail.com

We have posted our Code of Conduct page which we have adopted so that our event can continue in the Community Centre. The other details are outlined on our About Page. The parking is free at the back of the Mill-Courtland Community Centre and admission is still $3 at the door. the facility is wheelchair accessible, alcohol, smoke and peanut free and every show is different. If you don’t come, you’ll miss it. The next open stage will be November 16th.

The Fair Wind…Traditional Celtic Music:

The Fair Wind sings and plays acoustically, the traditional folk music of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Cape Breton. Comprised of Carole Pines, Ruth Shushan, Mark Pancer, and Bob Mino, they collectively play the fiddle, penny whistle, low whistle, guitar, mandolin, banjolin, Irish bouzouki, banjo, bodhran, harmonica, spoons, and mountain dulcimer. Along with their songs they treat listeners to traditional jigs, reels, and other dance forms mined from the rich heritage of the British Isles and Ireland. The Fair Wind promises to transport listeners with fine harmonies and creative arrangements.

June 15th was the last Open Stage for the 24th season of Black Walnut. Thanks to the Cedar Hills Community Group for hosting us at the Mill Courtland Community Centre. It was the annual Black Walnut for the “second homeless” on the May long weekend, plus for exceptional reasons our Committee was short-handed. Still, thanks to our faithful few a successful production was staged.  For our next date on Friday June 15, 2018 at 8pm, we will start out with a feature set by Gordon Castle, which will without a doubt be a very interesting musical event.
