Cancelled: Friday March 20th
(Event Cancelled) You are invited to the next Black Walnut Acoustic Open Stage Event Friday, March 20, 2020 starting at 7:30pm. Bring your guitars, accordions, voices, acoustic instruments of all sorts or just your eyes and ears and make yourself feel at home. Do not feel shy because you have not played for us before.
The doors will open and sign-up for the open stage will start at 7:15 pm. Remember when you sign up you get to play/sing two songs in a set of 10 minutes or less and you need to be ready to start playing when your turn starts so you won’t lose any of your 10 minutes.
The entrance and free parking are at the back of the Mill-Courtland Community Centre and admission is still $3 at the door. the facility is wheelchair accessible, alcohol, smoke and peanut free and every show is different. If you don’t come, you’ll miss it. The next open stage will be April17th. Black Walnut on February 21 2020 started with a terrific feature set by Outside the Box: Peter F. Light, Gwen Potter and David Lum. I posted a photo of them that I took with my phone on our Performers Pictures page. Thanks to them and to our Open Stage performers. Special thanks to everyone who helped set up and move things along. We were short handed for production crew again but we enjoyed a great evening. Our Open Stage performers were:

Outside the Box Will Be Featured February 21, 2020
Outside the Box is a folk music trio that is gonna dazzle our next Black Walnut evening on February 21, 2020 with a feature set to start the program at 7:30 pm. It might be a good idea to get there early especially if you wish to sign up for the open stage. We should have enough time for 10 or more open stage performers. Doors open at 7:15 pm.

Friday, January 17, 2020 Black Walnut started off with technical difficulties with our star sound guys both unavailable to set up our new system that nobody else knows how to use. We did come up with a simple system that we got ready just about on time for 7:30 pm start and mostly did a good job with the sound. We had a fine turnout of performers and listeners in spite of the storm warnings. On January 17th the Open Stage performers were:

No Smoking Reminder
No-Smoking Reminder: The entire Community Centre property is included in the City of Kitchener policy of a total ban on smoking on the property. That includes tobacco, marijuana and other smoking and includes both inside and outside the Community Centre.

The Fair Wind Was Featured October 19, 2018

Open Stage on September 21, 2018 Was Lots of Fun
We started off our 25th season of the Black Walnut on Friday, Sptember 21st. Most performers played 3 songs. We’ll be back on Friday October 19th with “Fair Wind” to start the evenieng off with a Celtic traditional feature set. On September 21st, our Open Stage performers were:

Markus Michelucci Started and Ended the 2017 Christmas, Black Walnut
On Friday December 15th, 2017, Markus Michelucci started off the evening with a feature performance of his original songs. It has been a while since we have seen or heard from Markus who has been in Europe with his group, Sound Refuge” Markus Michelucci & Sound Refuge perform at festivals and events throughout the UK such as Barnival, Greenwich Tall Ships Festival. We are glad that he agreed to do a set for us during his visit back to Canada. After the feature set, we had a full open stage, including some collaborations, some seasonal songs and a “newbie”. We also took a short break from the music, cookies and sweets to hand out some door prizes. After the Open Stage performers has all completed their songs Markus closed out the evening with a couple of seasonal numbers. We’ll be back on Friday January 19th for the next Black Walnut Acoustic Open Stage which is planned to be all Open stage.

Christmas Season Treats, Prizes, & Markus Michelucci Feature Performance
On Friday December 15th, 2017 at 8pm we will be back at the Mill Courtland Community Centre for our monthly Open Stage. Markus Michelucci will be back to start off the evening with a feature performance. It has been a while since we have seen or heard from Markus who has been in Europe with his group, Sound Refuge” We are glad that he has agreed to do a set for us during his visit back to Canada.
“Led by Canadian Markus Michelucci, Sound Refuge is an eclectic mix of performers who come together to play engaging, thoughtful folk music from the calm and reassuring to the passionate and cerebral. They create an alluring world of instrumentation with powerful lead moments, harmonies and hopeful, inspiring lyrics. Often likened to Cat Stevens, James Taylor and Passenger.
Markus Michelucci & Sound Refuge perform at festivals & events throughout the UK such as Barnival, Greenwich Tall Ships Festival, Rochester Sweeps Festival, the Minehead Musicians Festival and more. Markus has performed live on BBC Radio, Shoreditch Radio and regularly on the streets of London at Borough Market, Southbank Centre and London Farmers Markets. Having toured France last summer, they’ll be touring Germany later this year to support the new release. The duo also performed for Sofar Sounds in Edinburgh early this year!
