  • Read All About the Open Stage on May 18th.

On Friday May 18th, 2012, the Folk Club was an All Open Stage. It was one of our better turnouts this year and the variety and entertainment was terrific. On a sadder note, a bike that was parked in the Hallway was reported stolen during the evening. There are lots of times when nobody from the club is in the hallway so there is a risk for any property that is left outside in the hallway. I am not aware of any previous incident like that, but it could happen again, so be warned. (more…)

  • Don Sawchuck Was the Featured Performer April 20, 2012

Those who chose to drive around the “road closed” signs on Friday night were treated to a fine opening set by Don Sawchuk. They also found that there is actually no construction happening around the Mill Courtland Community Centre or the access to the driveway on Mill Street. Don was accompanied by Don Pharoah on percussion and Gwen Potter on Viola. We got to hear some of Don’s work at the Black Walnut Folk Club last year and at an open sing-around that he hosted for us at the Millrace Festival in August, it was clear that Don’s musical ability was outstanding. Don is a singer-songwriter who grows on you some more each time you get to see him perform. You can see him on Youtube including this link: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/feature-spotlight-maxwells-open-mic .”

Some of our regular open stage performers did not make it but we had 15 open stage acts after Don was finished. Apologies to the last two performers who were limited to 1 song each because we ran out of time. We even had two first time Black Walnut performers as follows:

    Nathan Few
    Dan Hergott
    Dan Kearney
    Gwen Potter
    Randy Ouillette
    Russ Bishop
    Scott Abrams
    Robbie Hancock – NEW
    David Maranta
    Wayne Cheater
    Bruce Williams
    Kim Ellis
    Ruth Jenkins
    Peter Light
    Dan Pharoah – NEW

Next Month on Friday May 18, we’ll be back with an all open stage evening.

  • More Open Stage Updates

Sometimes we have such a good time we don’t notice when one or two people are really messing things up for numerous other people. That is when people complain, and that is what they should do. Last month we had a couple of songs that were had offensive language and or subject matter. We arent going to identify them here. The other thing is that one performer used twice as much time as most people to do two songs. It was way more than 10 minutes.

Here is an important addition to our “Updates” for the Open Stage performers:

8.We will probably not let you know how much time you have left after you finish your first song, unless you ask. If you have less than 3 minutes left you probably should not start another song. To help you out with this, understand that if your songs are each more than 4 minutes long, you probably won’t have time for more than one song, because it always take at least a minute for you to get on-stage and ready to start your first song.

    9. Black Walnut, the Mill Courtland Community Centre are family friendly. Some performers have slipped some offensive language and subjects into their songs and it does get us a bad response from people who need to let us know how offensive that is. They are right to complain. Choose appropriate material, always.

On Friday, January 20, Tom Massiah started the evening at the Black Walnut Folk Club with a 30 min set of mostly original songs. • October 21 Black Walnut Was All Open Stage

We had a ball at the Mill-Courtland Community Centre on Friday night. We had all 16 time slots filled by performers including 3 first-time Black Walnut performers.

Thanks to Dan for getting the sound set up just right and to Karen for being our new MC and to everyone else who helped out, or performed or listened to the music. We had a great night.
