The Black Walnut Open Stage on January 18th was chock full of fun and great music, The growth in our audience more than made up for a shorter list of performers. Everybody kept on playing more songs until our regular closing time.

Well in spite of a reduced turnout maybe because of conflicts like the Brantford Open Stage and the busy Christmas Party season, we had a great evening of songs, treats and prizes on Friday December 21, 2012. There was some Christmas/seasonal theme in evidence. Thanks to all who have contributed to the club this year either by attending our monthly Open Stage or performing or helping with the production. On Friday, November 16, 12 performers and more listeners made it through the construction to the Mill Courtland Community Centre for the Black Walnut Acoustic Open Stage. We had a fine evening with some long absent returning performers. One of our friends managed to get down Mill Street to the closed section and left his car there until we concluded the festivities. A goodly multitude managed to navigate the road construction closure for the Open Stage on October 18th. We had twelve fine musical performers and a couple of encores to round out the evening. We’ll be back on Friday November 16th with another all Open stage event.

Our 2012-13 season got off to a fine start on September 21. Most people found the new temporary driveway on Stirling Avenue got them in without dealing with the road construction. We had great turnout and were treated by one new performer and a return from Three folks that we used to see and hear on a regular basis. (more…)

The Millrace Festival of Traditional Folk Music, in Cambridge August 3-5 is the biggest Local Festival. Check it out. For info go to http://www.millracefolksociety.com/

In addition to lots of concerts and work shops featuring top musicians from a wide variety of traditions there are dances, playing sessions and sing-a-rounds, all in the beautiful downtown Galt area of Cambridge. Plus it is free of charge. So, check it out, buy a program, make a donation, sing some songs and join the Millrace folk Society.

Well folkies, the club is off for the summer until September 21, 2012.

We had a great evening with top notch performances and announced a new name for our event. Starting immediately our monthly music event will no longer be called the “Black Walnut Folk Club”. The new name is (drum-roll please) the “Black Walnut Acoustic Open Stage” (more…)

Those who chose to drive around the “road closed” signs on Friday night were treated to a fine opening set by Don Sawchuk. They also found that there is actually no construction happening around the Mill Courtland Community Centre or the access to the driveway on Mill Street. Don was accompanied by Don Pharoah on percussion and Gwen Potter on Viola. We got to hear some of Don’s work at the Black Walnut Folk Club last year and at an open sing-around that he hosted for us at the Millrace Festival in August, it was clear that Don’s musical ability was outstanding. Don is a singer-songwriter who grows on you some more each time you get to see him perform. Some of our regular open stage performers did not make it but we had 15 open stage acts after Don was finished. Apologies to the last two performers who were limited to 1 song each because we ran out of time. We even had two first time Black Walnut performers as follows:
